  • 3 Natural Carpet Fibers for Ahwatukee Homes
    true
Ahwatukee homeowners value high quality and healthy flooring material – especially when allergies or other sensitivities are a factor. You may have avoided carpet in the past for these reasons, but our experts at Floor Coverings International Chandler-Gilbert are here to share 3 natural carpet fibers that offer a durable and eco-friendly alternative to the classic carpet. Wool Wool is one of our most sustainable flooring options. Exactly like your favorite socks or sweater, wool carpet is made from harvested sheep fur! It’s renewable, requires little energy to manufacture, and has very few added chemicals. Plus, we can’t forget about the unquestionable softness and warmth that wool adds to cozy spaces like living rooms. Wool is an excellent investment for a completely hypoallergenic, durable flooring solution. Sisal In certain spaces, a textured carpet adds eye-catching style. Sisal fibers are made from agave plants and are extremely durable. The toughness of sisal creates a unique texture, and such durability is great for high-traffic areas in your home. Many Ahwatukee homeowners also love the aesthetic of a sisal area rug over hardwood or tile for a carpeted layer of protection. Seagrass Did you know there’s a carpet made from seagrass? Harvested from marshes in places like China and India, seagrass is crafted into a durable yarn and has an appropriate sea-green coloring. The yarn is then woven into a beautiful carpet material, creating another eco-friendly option. Homeowners also enjoy the added softness this natural carpet fiber has compared to some other, rougher choices. Get Started in Ahwatukee Today! There is no reason to compromise between your love of carpet and your desire for a natural flooring solution. Call our design experts at Floor Coverings International Chandler-Gilbert and schedule a free, in-home consultation today! • 4 Backsplash Styles To Liven Up Your Kitchen or Bath
    true
You already know that installing tile floors in your Gilbert home will increase its beauty and value, but have you considered tile upgrades elsewhere? Tile backsplashes, mostly found in kitchens or bathrooms, are a relatively small way to make a big impact. Subway Tile Named after the iconic repetitive horizontal tiles in New York City subway stations, subway tile is a simple and elegant way to upgrade your above-the-countertop look in kitchens or baths. The classic subway tile look has a glossy finish, while more modern homes sometimes go with a matte finish. Perhaps the most popular look for subway tile backsplash is all white tiles with a darker grout coloring (grey or black), but there is no limiting what you can do in your Gilbert home. Checkered Tile The best backsplashes serve as an accent toward the larger aesthetic of a room, and checkered tile is a great example of this. Another homage to years past, black and white checkered tile is best used when it enhances other areas of the room. For instance, checkered tile can work perfectly in a kitchen that has dark cabinets but light countertops. In this case, the black and white checkers help to blend the light and dark. Mosaic Tile The repetitive squares and rectangles of subway and checkered tiles are beautiful, but they aren’t for everyone. If you would like something with more personality, it’s time to consider mosaic tile. Depending on the size of the project, your backsplash mosaic could be pieced together by dozens or even hundreds of smaller pieces of tile that collectively create a stunning visual. Mosaics can be more expensive than the other options because of the time and expertise it takes to do the job well, but few design options can elevate a room like a quality mosaic backsplash. Glass Tile If you are looking for a backsplash option that offers a modern twist for your Gilbert home, you may want to think about glass tile. Increasing in popularity over the years throughout the Gilbert area, glass tile is a tremendous way to introduce a splash of color into your kitchen without overpowering it. Taking advantage of the Arizona light, a glass backsplash can be all that’s necessary to take your kitchen to the next level. Get Started Today Here at Floor Coverings International Chandler-Gilbert, we understand that picking the perfect backsplash is not easy. It should… Read more »

  • A Guide To Picking Your Perfect Tile Floor
    true
Tile floors are a tremendous upgrade to any home, but with so many options available, picking out the perfect one for your Ahwatukee home can be a challenge. Here at Floor Coverings International Chandler-Gilbert, we take great pride in making that decision as easy as possible for you. Here is our quick guide to finding the perfect tile floor! Ceramic & Porcelain Tile Advantage: Versatility. Ceramic and porcelain titles come in seemingly endless options of size, color and glaze, making it just about a guarantee that you can find the perfect fit for whatever aesthetic you are trying to achieve. Consider: Durability. These tiles can sometimes be more susceptible to damage (breaks, chips, etc.) than other tiles, but often that is a result of improper installation. To ensure the best possible service, trust our experts at Floor Coverings International Chandler-Gilbert. Slate Tile Advantage: Durability. As beautiful as slate tile is, its biggest advantage is likely its durability. One of the hardest floors on the market, slate is incredibly resistant to scratches, chips, cracks and dents. That makes it the perfect choice for active homes with children and pets. Consider: Price and value. Because slate tile is mined and not manufactured, it is a bit more expensive than other flooring options. But for the same reason (and many others), it is a sure-fire way to immediately increase the re-sale value of your home. Granite Tile Advantage: Appearance. Granite’s beauty is in its individuality. Its look forms during the cooling process, and as a result no two slabs are the same. Granite comes in a wide variety of colors and designs, and so it is relatively easy to find the perfect fit for your home. Consider: Maintenance. There is no reason why your granite tile won’t last you as long as you take care of it. It is important to get it sealed during installation as well as resealing it every two years to prevent stains and other damage. Travertine Tile Advantage: Classic, old-world feel. If travertine brings to mind thoughts of ancient Roman buildings, there is a reason for that. It was popular then and it still is today! Consider: Maintenance. Similar to granite, properly maintained travertine tile floors will last for decades. However, because it is porous, it is important to have it sealed or polished regularly to protect it from dirt and moisture. Taking The Next Step Toward Tile… Read more »

  • Understanding the Janka Hardness Scale
    true
When deciding the type of hardwood to install in your home, it is important to understand all the factors that go into choosing the right species of wood. Unfortunately, there is some flooring lingo thrown around that may not make sense to non-professionals, which makes it hard to make an educated decision of your own. The Janka Hardness Scale is one of the most used variables when discussing the durability and longevity of a wood species. Although the experts at Floor Coverings International Chandler-Gilbert can easily base our recommendations off this scale, we want you to understand it too! What is the Janka Hardness Scale? The Janka Hardness Scale was invented in 1906 by Austrian wood scientist Gabriel Janka. The test measures the hardness of different species of hardwood, which is helpful when determining their resistance to scratches and damage. The test measures the amount of force required to push a .444 inch diameter steel ball halfway into a 2x2x6 inch piece of wood. The scale has a range of 0-4000, and the higher the number, the harder the wood. Red Oak has a score of 1290, and serves as a benchmark against which other woods are compared. It is common to hear phrases such as, “Mahogany is 71% harder than red oak”, which is referring to their respective scores on the Janka scale. How Should You Use the Janka Scale? Many homeowners believe that in order to ensure the best longevity of their hardwood floors, they should choose a species with a very high Janka rating. In reality, most of our Gilbert customers choose wood species with relatively low Janka ratings, such as oak or cherry. This is because most of the very hard wood species are not only expensive, but they can also be more difficult to install due to their hardness. With difficult installations, it is sometimes necessary to order extra wood if there are mistakes cutting and sizing the wood, which then makes the project even more expensive. The Janka scale is important, but ultimately you should choose the hardwood that you think is the best fit for your home and budget. There are many different types of hardwood that have different tone, grain, and receptiveness to stain, all of which should also be factored into your decision. All hardwood species have the potential to get scratched, which is why it is more important to practice… Read more »
  • How to Choose the Right Tile for Your Bathroom
    true
We love tile here at Floor Coverings International Chandler-Gilbert because of the endless opportunities it provides to be creative and personalize your home how you want it. Tiles come in many different materials, colors, cuts, size, and textures, which can make choosing the right style for your bathroom overwhelming. We’re here to help narrow down the choices and help you find the right tile for your Gilbert bathroom. Size One of the first things to consider when choosing a tile is the size you want for your bathroom floors. Tile comes in sizes from square inch mosaic tiles, to 16×16 oversize travertine tiles. A general rule of thumb when choosing tile size is that the smaller the room, the smaller the tile, and vice versa. If you have a large bathroom, it isn’t recommended to use small tiles as it can be visually overwhelming and distracting. Budget Tiles are available within a wide price range, so there are many different options for each budget. For a classic tile, ceramic and porcelain are a couple of the most affordable options. These can be made in a variety of colors and patterns and have a sleek and uniform look when installed. For a similar look at an even lower price point, some choose to use vinyl tiles. These perform the same function, but don’t quite have the same gloss that ceramic and porcelain do. Marble and granite are two of the most elegant tile materials whose high-class reputation comes with a higher price tag. Aesthetic Preference The most important factor to consider of course, is how you want your bathroom to look. If you are looking for a bold and unique statement, you might choose a combination of bright color and interesting pattern to draw attention to the floor. Recently, it has been trendy to opt for more natural looks with natural stone or synthetic wood tiles which create a calming and organic ambience in the room. For those who want a luxury bathroom that looks high quality, marble or a marble substitute would make a fine choice. Ultimately, no matter what your aesthetic goals and budget are, there is a tile out there for you. The important thing is to do your research and have a clear vision in mind for how you want your bathroom to look. Get Started Today in Gilbert Let the experts help you make your dream… Read more »
  • 4 Flooring Options for a Farmhouse-Inspired Look
    true
Farmhouse interiors are all the rage these days, and many Gilbert homeowners are looking to achieve a farmhouse-inspired design in their space. When it comes to choosing a floor to pull off your farmhouse look, we recommend opting for a hardwood or wood-look product. Rustic wood planks are the flooring of choice in most farmhouses, and they’ll help give an authentic look to your design. Here are several farmhouse-inspired flooring recommendations from Floor Coverings International Chandler-Gilbert: Wood-Look Tile Ceramic wood-look tile offers all the convenience of tile flooring but looks like real wood planks. An inkjet process is used to print realistic wood grain onto the ceramic pieces, but once installed, they’re more durable than real wood, and they’re easier to clean. For a true farmhouse design, choose a dark-hued tile with rustic textures and patterns, and use a matching grout. Luxury Vinyl Planks Luxury vinyl is a second option for homeowners who want the warmth and appearance of hardwood floors on a lower budget. Luxury vinyl can be made to mimic a variety of other flooring materials, including hardwood, yet it costs less to install and is ridiculously easy to maintain. Many of today’s luxury vinyl products are textured to look and feel like real wood, so be sure to choose a floor that has some rustic texture! Laminate Laminate flooring is usually sold in planks. A heat and pressure process is used to fuse composite materials together into a durable plank and a photographic image is added on top. Laminate floors cost less than hardwood floors and they require minimal maintenance. Some laminate floors look more realistic than others, so go for a high-quality laminate floor that looks and feels like real wood! Genuine Hardwood Many traditional farmhouse kitchens feature genuine hardwood floors. Hardwood is an investment that’s a bit pricier than many other options, but it’s also the one that will raise your home’s resale value significantly. Real hardwood can be refinished many times and even re-stained to update the look of your floor. For a truly authentic design, consider reclaimed hardwood flooring (which may have actually been salvaged from a real-life farmhouse!).
